In a small village, there lived a poor woman who had no family. She used to milk her cows and deliver the milk to various homes in the village every day. Her livelihood depended on this. She also supplied milk daily to a hermitage on the outskirts of town.
One day, as the hermit was performing his prayers, he realized that the milk needed for the offering was not there yet. Annoyed by the delay, he scolded the woman, “Why can’t you bring the milk on time consistently? Everything is getting delayed because of you.”
The woman replied, “I apologize, sir. I will leave home earlier from now on, but I have to wait for a boat to cross the river.”
The hermit, in a playful tone, remarked, “Are you waiting for a boat to cross the river while my devotee, Atti, is crossing the ocean of existence by chanting ‘Krishna Krishna’? It’s no big task to cross Atti. Carry on. If you can’t make it in time, I don’t need your milk anymore.”
The woman listened with great respect and began bringing milk promptly from the next day. The hermit started having doubts about the sudden change. “Is this a miracle? Is she really coming on time?” he wondered.

Curious, he suggested, “Let’s see if you can really cross Atti using your mantra.”
At the riverbank, he asked her, “Show me how you do it.” The milkmaid, chanting “Krishna Krishna,” began walking into the water.
Watching this, the hermit was torn between amazement and hesitation. He thought, “I don’t know the river’s depth. What if I get wet? My clothes will be ruined.”
After some hesitation, he tried to step into the water, also chanting “Krishna Krishna.” However, his foot sank in, and he got startled.

The woman humbly replied, “Sir, while your lips are chanting ‘Krishna Krishna,’ your hands are holding your clothes to keep them dry. Moreover, your attempt to measure the river’s depth reflects more concern about your own well-being than the depth of your devotion to the Lord.”
The hermit lowered his head in shame, realizing the true essence of devotion.
