Mukesh, the grocer, was very greedy. He would mix stones in pulses and coloured sand in spices and sell them to the poor villagers. The villagers complained to him but he turned a deaf ear to them, as his was the only grocery store in the village. The villagers, then decided to teach him a lesson. They all gathered and went to the king to make a complaint against him.

On hearing this the king became very angry and ordered his courtiers to summon him to the court. When Mukesh was brought to the court, the king rebuked him saying, “You have been cheating the innocent villagers for the past so many months and for this, you will be punished”. The grocer was frightened and asked for forgiveness. The king gave him the relaxation of choosing his punishment.

The king asked him either to get ready to go beaten a thousand times or eat one hundred onions at a time. The grocer became happy thinking it to be an easy punishment and chose to eat onions. But having eaten only 20 onions, tears rolled down his eyes and he asked to be beaten.

When guards started lashing him and the count reached to 50, Mukesh cried with pain and knelt down before the king feeling extremely sorry for his deeds. He promised not to cheat anyone in future. The king released him on a warning and Mukesh lived the life of an honest person thereafter.

पंसारी मुकेश बहुत लालची था। वह दालों में पत्थर और मसालों में रंगीन बालू मिलाकर गरीब ग्रामीणों को बेच देता था। ग्रामीणों ने उससे शिकायत की, लेकिन उसने अनसुना कर दिया, क्योंकि गांव में उसकी एकमात्र किराने की दुकान थी। इसके बाद ग्रामीणों ने उसे सबक सिखाने का फैसला किया। वे सब इकट्ठे हो गए और राजा के पास शिकायत करने के लिए गए।

यह सुनकर राजा बहुत क्रोधित हुआ और उसने अपने दरबारियों को उसे दरबार में बुलाने का आदेश दिया। जब मुकेश को दरबार में लाया गया तो राजा ने उसे फटकारते हुए कहा, “तुम इतने महीनों से निर्दोष गाँव वालों को धोखा दे रहे हो और इसके लिए तुम्हें दंड दिया जाएगा”। पंसारी डर गया और क्षमा मांगी। राजा ने उसे अपना दंड चुनने की छूट दे दी।

राजा ने उससे कहा कि या तो एक हजार बार पिटने के लिए तैयार हो जाओ या एक बार में एक सौ प्याज खाओ। पंसारी इसे आसान सजा समझकर खुश हो गया और उसने प्याज खाने का फैसला किया। लेकिन केवल 20 प्याज खाने के बाद उनकी आंखों से आंसू छलक पड़े और उन्होंने पीटने को कहा।

जब पहरेदारों ने उसे कोड़े मारने शुरू किए और गिनती 50 तक पहुँची, तो मुकेश दर्द से कराह उठा और राजा के सामने घुटनों के बल झुक गया और उसे अपने किए पर बहुत पछतावा हुआ। उन्होंने भविष्य में किसी के साथ धोखा नहीं करने का वादा किया। राजा ने उसे चेतावनी देकर छोड़ दिया और उसके बाद मुकेश ने एक ईमानदार व्यक्ति का जीवन व्यतीत किया।
