What is a clause?

A clause is the basic unit of grammar. A clause is a grammatical unit that contains both a subject and a predicate (verb) and can express a complete thought. Clauses play a crucial role in forming sentences, as they provide the essential elements necessary for conveying meaning.

Examples:-

I have eaten food. – मैंने खाना खा लिया है।
The sale starts at 9 am tomorrow. – सेल कल सुबह 9 बजे शुरू होगी।
I didn’t sleep well last night. – मुझे कल रात ठीक से नींद नहीं आई।
Are you listening to the radio? – क्या आप रेडियो सुन रहे हैं?

Definition of Clause:

A clause is a group of words that includes a subject (who or what the sentence is about) and a predicate (what the subject is doing or what is happening to the subject). Clauses can function as complete sentences on their own or as part of larger sentences.

Clause किसी बड़े Sentence के वे छोटे-छोटे Sentence होता है, जिनसे एक बड़ा Sentences बना होता है, और इन वाक्यों की अपनी एक Main Verb होती है, तो ऐसे प्रत्येक Sentence को Clause (उपवाक्य) कहते हैं।

Kinds of Clauses in English Grammar in Hindi:

1. Independent Clause (Main Clause):

An independent clause (also known as a main clause) is a clause that forms a complete, independent thought. It does not require anything else to be considered complete, and so it can stand alone as a sentence.

एक स्वतंत्र उपवाक्य (जिसे मुख्य उपवाक्य के रूप में भी जाना जाता है) एक ऐसा उपवाक्य है जो एक पूर्ण, स्वतंत्र विचार बनाता है। इसे पूर्ण मानने के लिए किसी और चीज़ की आवश्यकता नहीं है, और इसलिए यह एक वाक्य के रूप में अकेला खड़ा हो सकता है।

A single independent clause is known as a simple sentence. It contains a subject and a predicate, each of which can have modifiers.

एक स्वतंत्र उपवाक्य को सरल वाक्य कहा जाता है। इसमें एक Subject और एक Predicate शामिल है, जिनमें से प्रत्येक में Modifier हो सकते हैं।

Clause in English Grammar in Hindi

For example:

I refused to accept his proposal. – मैंने उसका प्रस्ताव मानने से इनकार कर दिया।
They like to stay in fancy hotels. – वे आलीशान होटलों में रहना पसंद करते हैं।
The girl in the red jacket ran quickly towards the bus. – लाल जैकेट वाली लड़की तेज़ी से बस की ओर भागी।
I wish it weren’t Monday. – काश यह सोमवार न होता।

Sometimes we form a sentence with two (and occasionally more) independent clauses, which is known as a compound sentence. We join the independent clauses together with a comma and a co-ordinating conjunction or a semicolon without a conjunction.

कभी-कभी हम दो (और कभी-कभी अधिक) स्वतंत्र उपवाक्यों से एक वाक्य बनाते हैं, जिसे Compound Sentence के रूप में जाना जाता है। हम स्वतंत्र उपवाक्यों को अल्पविराम और सहसंयोजक समुच्चयबोधक या बिना समुच्चयबोधक अर्धविराम से जोड़ते हैं।

For example:

She wanted to play tennis, but he wanted to play basketball. – वह टेनिस खेलना चाहती थी, लेकिन वह बास्केटबॉल खेलना चाहता था।
My brother lives in Delhi; I wish I lived there. – मेरा भाई दिल्ली में रहता है; काश मैं वहां रहता।

2. Dependent Clause (Subordinate Clause):

A dependent clause (also called a subordinate clause) is a clause that cannot stand alone as a sentence because it doesn’t express a complete thought. It relies on an independent clause to form a complete, logical thought.

एक आश्रित उपवाक्य (जिसे अधीनस्थ उपवाक्य भी कहा जाता है) एक ऐसा उपवाक्य है जो एक वाक्य के रूप में अकेला कोई अर्थ नहीं दे सकता है, क्योंकि यह एक पूर्ण विचार व्यक्त नहीं करता है। यह एक संपूर्ण, तार्किक विचार बनाने के लिए एक Main Clause पर निर्भर करता है।

As such, it cannot stand on its own to form a sentence. Dependent clauses are usually marked by dependent words, such as subordinating conjunctions, relative pronouns, or relative adverbs, which link them to independent clauses in a sentence.

For example:

Whenever I travel, I like to stay in fancy hotels. – मैं जब भी यात्रा करता हूं, तो फैंसी होटलों में रुकना पसंद करता हूं।
We struck up a great conversation with a person whom we met on the plane. – हमने एक व्यक्ति के साथ बहुत अच्छी बातचीत की, जिससे हम विमान में मिले थे।

She found it strange that they like to eat sushi. – उसे यह अजीब लगा कि उन्हें सुशी खाना पसंद है।
