Difference between Few / Little / Less / Fewer in Hindi

Rule-1. We often use (a) few and (a) little with nouns. A few is used with plural countable noun and A little is used with uncountable noun. However, we can also use them as pronouns:

I have a few books of English. 

There is a little milk in the bottle.

This place has been visited by few. (= few people)

Do you want an ice-cream? There’s still a few left in the fridge. (= a few ice-cream)

Little is known about the her early life.

Do you know anything about Ranjan sir English classes?’ ‘A little.’

Rule-2. Mind that ‘Quite a few’ means ‘quite ‘A large number / A fairly large number’:

He has been away from work for quite a few days.

There are quite a few girls in the party.

Rule-3. We can use ‘The few + Plural Countable Noun’ and ‘The little + Uncountable Noun’ to suggest ‘Not enough’

This is one of the few book stores in the city where you can buy best books.

You should use the little time you have available to revise your lesson.

Rule-4. ‘What few / little’ to mean ‘the small (number / amount) can be used instead of the few / little.

Meera donated what little money she had in her purse to the organisation. (or the little money …)

What few books I have are very useful for all. (or The few books …)

Rule-5. Few can be used after personal pronouns (my, her, etc.) and these and those:

She learned to play the guitar during her few days off during the winter season.

These few miles of roads have taken over twenty years to be built.

Rule-6. Less (than) and fewer (than) – Less is used with uncountable nouns and fewer with plural countable nouns:

People should eat less fat.

There are fewer students in the class today.

Rule-7. ‘Less than’ is used with a noun phrase indicating an amount and ‘Fewer than’ with a noun phrase referring to a group of things or people:

She used to earn less than 10 thousand a month when she first joined this company.

What happened, there are fewer than 35 students at the lecture today.

Rule-8. When we talk about a sum of money or a distance Less than is used, not fewer than:

The railway station is less than a mile away.

I earned less than she does

Rule-9. ‘No fewer than’ is used to emphasize that a number is surprisingly large.

No fewer than ten chief ministers attended the session.

No fewer than hundred students joined my class today.

Rule-10. Mind that we prefer no less than with percentages, periods of time and quantities:

Profits have increased by no less than 95% in the last year.

The number of students has increased by no less than 10% this year.

She has been living here for no less than five years.

I have bought no less than 20 kg of onion.
