Good Manners Words in Hindi and English (Etiquette in Hindi and English)

Like the Hindi language, in English it is not a custom to put ‘G’ with the name, and it does not use respectful words like ‘you’ or ‘they’. There is also no custom to say ‘we’ for ‘I’. That is why many Hindi speaking people have been heard saying that English is a harsh language, because the word you is used in it while talking to elders also.

हिंदी भाषा की तरह अंग्रेजी में भी नाम के साथ ‘जी’ लगाने का रिवाज नहीं है, और इसमें ‘आप’ या ‘वे’ जैसे सम्मानजनक शब्दों का प्रयोग नहीं किया जाता है। ‘मैं’ के लिए ‘हम’ कहने का भी कोई रिवाज नहीं है। इसलिए कई हिंदी भाषी लोगों को यह कहते हुए सुना गया है कि अंग्रेजी एक कठोर भाषा है, क्योंकि इसमें आप जिस शब्द का प्रयोग करते हैं वह बड़ों से बात करते समय भी होता है।

But that is not really the case. Although there are no such respectful words as ‘you’ or ‘they’ in the English language, it is customary to express courtesy when spoken in English. Always keep this in mind to learn true and natural English.

लेकिन वास्तव में ऐसा नहीं है। यद्यपि अंग्रेजी भाषा में ‘आप’ या ‘वे’ जैसे सम्मानजनक शब्द नहीं हैं, लेकिन जब अंग्रेजी में बात की जाती है तो यह शिष्टाचार व्यक्त करने की प्रथा है। सच्ची और स्वाभाविक अंग्रेजी सीखने के लिए इसे हमेशा ध्यान में रखें।

[A] Repeat these English words in your mind. In these words the etiquette of the entire English race is included. These are very important words of the English language.

1. Please – प्लीज़

2. Thanks – थैंक्स

3. Welcome – वेल्कम

4. Kindly – काइन्डली

5. Allow me – अलाउ मी

6. After you – आफ़टर यू

7. Sorry – सॉरी

8. Excuse me – एक्सक्यूज़ मी

[B] If you have to take a pen from someone, or ask for a glass of water, or ask someone for time, or if you want to say ‘yes’ to someone in answer, then the word please has to be used in the sentence. If you just say (Please) please, it will work, but if you do not use words with similar meanings like (Please) please or (Kindly) kindly , then you will be called abusive. In Hindi you also say:

यदि आपको किसी से पेन लेना है, या एक गिलास पानी मांगना है, या किसी से समय मांगना है, या यदि आप किसी को जवाब में ‘हां’ कहना चाहते हैं, तो कृपया शब्द का इस्तेमाल करना होगा वाक्य। यदि आप केवल (कृपया) कहते हैं, तो यह काम करेगा, लेकिन यदि आप ( Please ) प्लीज़ या ( Kindly ) काइन्डली आदि समान अर्थ वाले शब्दों का प्रयोग नहीं करते हैं, तो आप अभद्र कहलाएंगे। हिन्दी में आप यू भी कह देते हैं :

A. जरा, अपना पेन देना ।

B. एक ग्लास पानी ।

C. क्या बज़ा है?

D. हां, पी लूंगा ।

[C] If a person has done a little work for you, for example – you asked the time or the address of the house and he told, you asked a little thing and he told, then thank you (Thank you) Don’t forget to say. Yes, you can also say thanks . If you want to show more favor, you can say:

यदि किसी व्यक्ति ने आपके लिए थोड़ा काम किया है, उदाहरण के लिए – आपने घर का समय या पता पूछा और उसने बताया, आपने एक छोटी सी बात पूछी और उसने बताया, तो धन्यवाद (Thank You) कहना न भूलिए। हाँ, आप Thanks भी कह सकते हैं। यदि आप अधिक एहसान दिखाना चाहते हैं, तो आप कह सकते हैं:

∙ Many many thanks to you (मेनी मेनी थैक्स टु यू)

∙ Thanks you very much (थैक्यू वेरी मच).

[D] If someone asks you to take something else and you don’t want to take it, then you don’t say like in Hindi – I don’t want to take more, I don’t want to take more. (I don’t want to take more), rather put it in short – No, thanks. (No, thanks).

यदि कोई आपसे कुछ और लेने के लिए कहे और आप उसे नहीं लेना चाहते हैं, तो आप हिंदी की तरह ऐसा कहिए- मैं और नहीं लेना चाहता, I don’t want to take more. ( आइ डोन्ट वांट टु टेक मोर ), बल्कि इसे संक्षेप में कहें – नहीं, धन्यवाद। (जी नहीं, धन्यवाद)।

[E] You did even a small work for someone and in return he said to you – Thank you (Thank you) so the talk in English does not end here. If you remain silent after hearing Thanks or Thank you , then you will be called Indecent or Arrogant. On this you have to say:

आपने किसी के लिए एक छोटा सा काम भी किया और बदले में उसने आपसे कहा – Thank you (धन्यवाद) इसलिए अंग्रेजी में बात यहीं खत्म नहीं होती है। अगर आप Thanks या Thank You सुनकर चुप हो जाते हैं, तो आप अभद्र या अभिमानी कहलाएंगे। इस पर आपको कहना होगा:

It’s all right. इट्स ऑल राइट ( सब ठीक है )

या No mention. नो मैन्शन ( कोई बात नहीं )

या It’s fine. इट्स फ़ाइन ( सब ठीक है )

या My pleasure. माइ प्लेज़र ( इसमें मेरी खुशी है )

या Welcome / You are welcome. वेल्कम / यू आर वेल्कम ( ऐसी तकलीफ फिर दें )

[F] If someone asks you for something and you want to give it, you will say in Hindi – take it. But in English if you said – Take it, then in English it will not be considered as etiquette. So you will say – Yes, you are welcome (Yes, you are welcome) or With great pleasure (with great pleasure).

अगर कोई आपसे कुछ मांगे और आप देना चाहें तो आप हिंदी में कहेंगे- ले लो। लेकिन अंग्रेजी में अगर आपने कहा- Take it ( टेक इट ), तो अंग्रेजी में इसे शिष्टाचार नहीं माना जाएगा। तो आप कहेंगे – Yes, you are welcome ( यस, यू आर वेल्कम ) या With great pleasure ( विथ ग्रेट प्लेज़र ).

[G] There is a way in English to say if you want to do some small service or help, for example, you would say u to offer to pick up a child from a woman’s lap or carry an old man’s bag – Allow me or May I help you? i.e. give me the opportunity … i.e. May I help you?

अंग्रेज़ी में यह कहने का एक तरीका है कि अगर आप कोई छोटी सी सेवा या मदद करना चाहते हैं, उदाहरण के लिए, आप कहेंगे कि आप किसी महिला की गोद से बच्चे को उठाने की पेशकश करते हैं या किसी बूढ़े आदमी का बैग उठाने की पेशकश करने के लिए यू कहेंगे –Allow me ( अलाउ मी ) या May I help you? ( में आइ हेल्प यू? ) यानी मुझे अवसर दें … अर्थात् क्या मैं आपकी सहायता कर सकता हूँ?

[H] While giving way to a woman or an old man, you say – ‘First you’ whereas in English conversation you would not say First you . Will say in English – After you (After you).

किसी महिला या वृद्ध आदमी को रास्ता देते समय आप कहते हैं – ‘पहले आप’ जबकि अंग्रेजी में बातचीत में आप यह नहीं कहेंगे कि First you (फ़स्ट यू)। अंग्रेज़ी में कहेंगे – After you (आफ़टर यू)

[I] It is customary to express regret over the matter in English. In Hindi also we express regret or ask for forgiveness, but then, when we have made a big mistake, like we did not reach on time after taking time from someone, then we express regret, and taking time on that day exactly. If not, then apologize for your crime. But even in small things in English, words like Sorry (Sorry), Excuse me (Excuse Me), Pardon (Pardon) etc. are used, like:

इस मामले पर अंग्रेजी में खेद व्यक्त करने की प्रथा है। हिंदी में भी हम खेद व्यक्त करते हैं या क्षमा मांगते हैं, लेकिन फिर, जब हमसे कोई बड़ी गलती हो जाती है, जैसे हम किसी से समय लेकर फिर कर, समय पर नहीं पहुंचते हैं, तो हम खेद व्यक्त करते हैं, और ठीक उसी दिन समय निकाल लेते हैं। यदि नहीं, तो अपने अपराध के लिए क्षमा करें। लेकिन अंग्रेज़ी में छोटी छोटी बातों में भी Sorry ( सॉरी ), Excuse me ( एक्सक्यूज़ मी ), या Pardon ( पार्डन ) आदि शब्दों का प्रयोग होता है, जैसे :

(a) If you touch someone’s hand, then you will have to say, sorry .

(b) Two men are talking standing in the way and you have to pass in the middle, then you will say – Excuse me . Similarly, after getting up from the people and you have to go for some work for a while, then you will not get up without saying anything, but will say – Excuse me (Excuse me). You can express yourself by saying Excuse me to attract the attention of a person to yourself.

दो आदमी रास्ते में खड़े होकर बात कर रहे हैं और आपको बीच में से गुजरना है, तो आप कहेंगे- Excuse me (एक्सक्यूज़ मी)। इसी तरह लोगों के बीच से उठकर आपको कुछ देर के लिए किसी काम पर जाना है, तो आप बिना कुछ कहे उठेंगे नहीं, बल्कि कहेंगे- Excuse me (एक्सक्यूज़ मी)। आप किसी व्यक्ति का ध्यान अपनी ओर आकर्षित करने के लिए Excuse me (एक्सक्यूज़ मी) कहकर कहकर आप अपनी बात कह सकते हैं।

(c) If you are listening to the telephone or talking to someone face to face, you do not hear and you want to hear it again, then you will not say like – ‘Ucha Bolo Na! I can’t hear anything.’ Speak loudly! Instead you will say in English Pardon (Pardon) or I beg your pardon (I beg your pardon) and the person in front will understand that you have not heard.

यदि आप टेलीफोन सुन रहे हैं या किसी से आमने-सामने बात कर रहे हैं, आप नहीं सुनते हैं और आप इसे फिर से सुनना चाहते हैं, तो आप ऐसा नहीं कहेंगे – ऊंचा बोलो ने! (Speak loudly!) मुझे कुछ सुनाई नहीं दे रहा है।’ जोर से बोलो! इसके बजाय आप अंग्रेजी में कहेंगे Pardon (पार्डन) या I beg your pardon (आइ बेग योर पार्डन) और सामने वाला व्यक्ति समझ जाएगा कि आपने नहीं सुना।

(d) Somebody is sitting in the room. If you have gone to meet him at his house, then you should not enter inside without informing or taking permission, but in English you will say a sentence to this effect – May I come in, please? May I come in, please (may I come in?) and he will turn back and say Yes, Please come in yes please come in (must) or With great pleasure with great pleasure or Of course of course (must) ).

कमरे में कोई बैठा है। यदि आप उनसे मिलने उनके घर गए हैं तो बिना बताए या अनुमति लिए आप अंदर प्रवेश न करें, लेकिन अंग्रेजी में आप इस आशय का एक वाक्य कहेंगे – May I come in, please? मे आइ कम इन, प्लीज़, और और वह जवाब में कहेगा Yes, Please come in यस प्लीज़ कम इन ( अवश्य ) या With a great pleasure विथ ग्रेट प्लेज़र या Of course ओफ़ कोर्स (अवश्य)।
