What is a sentence?

A group of words which has its subject, a finite verb and a logical meaning is called a sentence.

शब्दों का ऐसा समूह जिसका अपना सब्जेक्ट, एक Finite वर्ब और एक तार्किक अर्थ हो, वाक्य कहलाता है।

Definition of Assertive Sentences

The sentence which makes a statement or declare something is called a assertive sentence. In other words, we can say that it is used to answer the Yes-No questions. we use declarative sentences to provide any information to someone, The declarative sentences end with a period or full stop (.).

जिस वाक्य का प्रयोग कोई कथन कहने या किसी बात डिक्लेअर करने के लिए करते है, उसे निश्चयवाचक वाक्य कहते हैं। दूसरे शब्दों में, हम कह सकते हैं कि इसका उपयोग हाँ-नहीं प्रश्नों के उत्तर देने के लिए किया जाता है। हम किसी को कोई भी जानकारी प्रदान करने के लिए घोषणात्मक वाक्यों का उपयोग करते हैं, घोषणात्मक वाक्य एक पीरियड या पूर्ण विराम (.) के साथ समाप्त होते हैं।

Examples:-

Rohan has ten jeeps. [रोहन के पास दस जीप हैं।]
He is one of my brothers. [वह मेरे भाइयों में से एक है।]
I love her very much. [मैं उससे बहुत प्यार करता हुँ।]
He does not live in Delhi. [वह दिल्ली में नहीं रहता है।]
We are not ready to invest in your company. [हम आपकी कंपनी में निवेश करने को तैयार नहीं हैं।]
You have not met me yet. [आप अभी तक मुझसे नहीं मिले हैं।]

Types of Assertive Sentence in English

There are two types of Assertive sentence.

1. Positive or Affirmative :- The sentence which has a positive meaning or in which something is accepted is called a positive sentence.

जिस वाक्य का अर्थ सकारात्मक होता है या जिसमें कुछ स्वीकार किया जाता है, उसे सकारात्मक वाक्य कहते हैं।

Examples: –
He is my best friend. [वह मेरा सबसे अच्छा मित्र है।]
Rohan is good at English. [रोहन अंग्रेजी में अच्छा है।]
I am a student of Mr. Ranjan Sir. [मैं श्री रंजन सर का छात्र हूं।]
She is interested in cooking. [उसे खाना पकाने में रुचि है।]

2. Negative Sentence :- The sentence which has negative sentence or in which something is denied is called a negative sentence.

जिस वाक्य में नकारात्मक वाक्य हो या जिसमें किसी बात का खंडन हो उसे नकारात्मक वाक्य कहते हैं।

Examples: –
They are not playing cricket. [वे लोग क्रिकेट नहीं खेल रहे हैं।]
Radha does not study with me. [राधा मेरे साथ नहीं पढ़ती है।]
You don’t speak English in the class. [आप कक्षा में अंग्रेजी नहीं बोलते हैं।]
My friend is not present today. [मेरा मित्र आज उपस्थित नहीं है।]

Definition of Interrogative Sentences

The sentence which is used to ask questions interrogate, or to do some inquiry is called interrogative sentence. It always ends with a question mark (?).

जिस वाक्य का प्रयोग प्रश्न पूछने या कुछ पूछने के लिए किया जाता है, उसे प्रश्नवाचक वाक्य कहते हैं। यह हमेशा एक प्रश्न चिह्न (?) के साथ समाप्त होता है।

Types of Interrogative Sentence in English

1. Yes-No Question :- The question which starts with a helping verb and can be answered by saying only Yes or No is called Yes-No Question.

वह प्रश्न जो सहायक क्रिया से शुरू होता है और जिसका उत्तर केवल हाँ या ना कहकर दिया जा सकता है, हाँ-नहीं प्रश्न कहलाता है।

Helping Verbs List :-

Primary Helping Verbs :- is/am/are, was/were, do/does/did, has/have/had

Modal Helping Verbs :- can, could, may, might, shall, should, will, would, must, need, dare, ought to, used to.

2. Wh. Word Question :- The question which starts with a wh. word and cannot be answered by saying yes or no is called Wh. Word Question.

वह प्रश्न जो Wh. Word से शुरू होता है और जिसका उत्तर हाँ या ना कहकर नहीं दिया जा सकता है, उसे Wh. Interrogative कहा जाता है।

Definition of Imperative Sentences

The sentence which is used to give some command, order, or instructions, or to make any request or plea or to give warning. It generally ends with a full stop. When there is any strong emotion involved while making a request or giving any command in that case imperative sentence will end with an exclamation mark (!)

वह वाक्य जिसका प्रयोग कोई आदेश, या निर्देश देने के लिए या कोई निवेदन करने के लिए किया जाता है। यह आम तौर पर एक पूर्ण विराम के साथ समाप्त होता है। जब अनुरोध करते समय या कोई आदेश देते समय कोई मजबूत भावना शामिल होती है तो उस मामले में Imperative Sentence विस्मयादिबोधक चिह्न (!) से समाप्त होते है।

Examples :-

Always speak the truth.(advice)
Turn off the light. (order)
Don’t mess with me. (warning)
Do not waste your time.(advice)
Please help me.(request)
Please do not make a noise. (request)
Respect your elders. (advice)
Do not smoke. (advice)

Definition of Optative Sentences

The sentence which is used to express wish, curse, prayer or blessing is called optative sentence. It generally end with an exclamation mark (!).

ऐसे वाक्य जिससे आशीर्वाद, प्रार्थना, अभिशाप, मनोकामना आदि के भाव का बोध होता है, उसे इच्छा सूचक वाक्य (Optative Sentence) कहते हैं। इस तरह के वाक्यों का प्रयोग सामान्य बोलचाल में बहुत अधिक होता है।

Examples:-

भगवान करे आपकी लंबी उम्र हो !	May you live long!	Blessing (आशीर्वाद)
खुदा करे वह सफल हो जाए !	May he get success!	Keen wish (तीब्र इच्छा)
भगवान करे आप जल्द मर जाएँ !	May you die soon!	Curse (अभिशाप)
ईश्वर आपको आशीर्वाद दें!	God bless you!	Wish (इच्छा)
भगवान करे आप इस परीक्षा में पास कर जाए!	May you pass this exam!	Prayer (प्रार्थना)

NOTE:- Generally, Optative Sentence के अंत में Exclamation Mark का प्रयोग किया जाता है। जैसा आप सभी जानते है कि May का प्रयोग Interrogative Sentence तथा Optative Sentence दोनों में किया जाता है। May का प्रयोग Interrogative Sentence में सिर्फ आज्ञा लेने या देने के लिए किया जाता है, इस अर्थ में Sentence के अंत में Question Mark (?) का प्रयोग किया जाता है। जबकि “May” का प्रयोग Optative Sentences में इच्छा का भाव व्यक्त करने के लिए किया जाता है, और ऐसे वाक्य के अंत में Exclamation Mark का प्रयोग किया जाता है।

Generally, Exclamation Mark is used at the end of Optative Sentence. As you all know that May is used in both Interrogative Sentence and Optative Sentence. May is used in Interrogative Sentence only for taking or giving orders, in this sense Question Mark (?) is used at the end of the Sentence. While “May” is used in Optative Sentences to express the sense of desire, and Exclamation Mark is used at the end of such sentence.

May I go out ma’am? [क्या मैं बाहर जा सकता हूँ मैडम?]
May it rain today! [भगवान करे आज बारिश हो जाये!]

Definition of Exclamatory Sentences

The sentence which expresses some sudden feelings of joy or happiness, sadness, surprise, admiration or doubt is called Exclamatory Sentences.

जो वाक्य अचानक खुशी, उदासी, आश्चर्य, प्रशंसा या संदेह की भावनाओं को व्यक्त करते हैं उन्हें विस्मयादिबोधक वाक्य कहा जाता है।

Examples :-

How beautiful she is! [कितनी सुंदर है वह!]
Alas! I am ruined. [हाय! मैं बर्बाद हो गया]
What a lovely place it is! [कितना प्यारा जगह है यह!]
Bravo! you have done well. [शाबास! तुमने बड़ा अच्छा किया।]

Note:- Generally, Exclamatory Sentences start with an interjection.
