The last lesson is a story written by Alphonse Daudet. It tells us about events that happened in the year 1870 when France was taken over by Prussian forces led by Bismarck. During this time, the areas of Lorraine and Alsace came under Prussian control. In these two places, they stopped teaching the French language, and French teachers were told to leave.

As a result, M. Hamel, a French teacher, couldn’t continue teaching in his old school. However, his final lesson was filled with dedication and honesty. One of his students was initially scared of him, thinking he would be punished that day when he came to school. But he soon realized that this would be his last French lesson and understood the importance of the subject.

This story is told by a French boy named Franz. Franz is not very hardworking; he’s a bit lazy. But even though he’s lazy, Franz enjoys playing and is a sensitive person. Additionally, Franz doesn’t like his teacher, M. Hamel, at school, and he doesn’t care much about learning French.

After Germany took control of the Alsace and Lorraine regions in France, they ordered that schools there should teach German instead of French. This change in language instruction happened on the last day of Mr. Hamel, a French teacher who had been teaching there for forty years. Mr. Hamel had strong feelings of love for his country and was filled with sadness and longing for the past.

On his final day, many people from the village came to attend his last lesson as a way to show their respect and honor for him. The village community felt regretful and sad because they hadn’t learned their own native language when they were younger.

Franz gets a big surprise when he finds out that this will be his final French lesson. He’s surprised because he doesn’t know much French. But when he hears that it’s the last lesson, he suddenly becomes interested in learning French. He starts paying close attention and learns everything that’s taught on this last day.

All of a sudden, Franz starts to like his teacher, Mr. Hamel. His feelings of dislike disappear quickly. Additionally, Franz begins to admire how hardworking and sincere Mr. Hamel is. He feels sad and embarrassed because he can’t recite his lesson.

Mr. Hamel explains that everyone, including himself, is to blame for not being eager to learn. He takes responsibility for not being sincere enough in teaching them.

Mr. Hamel shows how much he loves his country when he talks about the French language. He believes that French is the most logical and beautiful language in the world. It seems like he gets emotional when he says this. He tells the class to protect their language because being connected to your language can help you avoid being controlled by others. He says that by knowing their language well, they can become free from the Germans.

People in the village begin to understand how important their native language is. They also realize that one reason they were defeated is because many of them couldn’t read or write.

Franz believes that it’s really hard to take away someone’s language because it’s a natural part of who they are. So, no matter how much someone tries to take it away, they won’t succeed.
