The story begins with an introduction to Dr. Sadao Hoki, a Japanese doctor living in a house located on the coast of Japan. They discussed whether they should throw him back into the sea or help him, knowing that aiding an enemy could lead to their arrest.

He provides the soldier with food, clothing, and a flashlight for signaling if needed. The soldier leaves at night, and Sadao later learns from the General that his promise to kill the soldier was forgotten due to the General’s illness. Sadao feels relieved that his plan succeeded and reflects on the complexities of his experiences and prejudices.
