Narration Practice Exercise Day-1 – Hello friends, In this post, you will get ten questions of direct-indirect speech along with their answer and explanations. These are the questions that are very much important for exams of SSC like CGL, CHSL, MTS, CDS, NDA and competitive exams. For the very basic all the questions are explained and you will get benefited from these questions of narration.
After reading this post, you will get to how to change the indirect speech of assertive sentences. To me, the more you practise the more you get such questions and understand the concepts.

1. He said, “I had a wonderful dream last night”.
(A) He said that he saw a wonderful dream last night.
(B) He said that he had seen a wonderful dream yesterday.
(C) He said that last night he had a wonderful dream.
(D) He said that he had a wonderful dream the previous night.
2. He said, “I am buying a new pen”.
(A) He said that he bought a new pen.
(B) He said that he was buying a new pen.
(C) He said that he had been buying a new pen.
(D) He said that he is buying a new pen.
3. “You did not return your book yesterday,” said the librarian.
(A) The librarian said that he had not returned his book the previous day.
(B) The librarian said that he had not returned his book yesterday.
(C) The librarian said the book not been returned the previous day.
(D) The librarian said that you had not returned your book yesterday.
4. “You are all doing very well,” said Mr. Jones.
(A) Mr. Jones said that we are all doing well.
(B) Mr. Jones said that they were all doing well.
(C) Mr. Jones said that they were all doing very well.
(D) Mr. Jones said that you are all doing very well.
5. “I finished it several days ago,” said Jack.
(A) Jack said that he finished it several days previously.
(B) Jack said that he had finished it several days earlier.
(C) Jack said that he finished it several days earlier.
(D) Jack said that he finish it several days ago.
6. “I will put this key here.” said the caretaker.
(A) The caretaker says that he would put the key there.
(B) The caretaker said that he will put the key there.
(C) The caretaker said that he would put the key there.
(D) The caretaker says that he would put the key here.
7. “I shall go tomorrow,” he said.
(A) He said that he would go the next day.
(B) He said that he shall go the next day.
(C) He said that he should go tomorrow.
(D) He said that he would go tomorrow.
8. Walter said, “I cannot do it now”.
(A) Walter says that he cannot do it now.
(B) Walter said that he could not do it now.
(C) Walter says that he cannot do it then.
(D) Walter said that he could not do it then.
9. He said, “I have done my job.”
(A) He said that he had been doing his job.
(B) He said that he has done his job.
(C) He said that he had done his job.
(D) He said that he have done his job.
10. The student said, “I am doing my homework.”
(A) The student said that she was doing her homework.
(B) The student said that she did her homework.
(C) The student said that she has been doing her homework.
(D) The student said that she is doing her homework.

Practice without Options
Q.1. He says to me, “I am your student and you are my teacher.”
Explanation:- If the reporting verb remains in the present or future tense, the tense of reported speech does not change. Only pronoun change is applied according to the 123/SON rule.[/bg_collapse]
Q.2. He said to me, “I am your student and you are my teacher.”
Q.3. She said to Mohan, “I like you because you are good at speaking English.”

Q.5. She said, “I am glad to be here this evening.”
Q.6. My mother said to him, “I will not let my son play with you.”
Q.7. She said to him, “I am going to leave you today because I have always supported and helped you but you have given me only tears.”
Q.8. He said, “I have bought this hen today and I will sell it tomorrow.”
Q.9. Ram said to Madhu, “I can help you if you give me some money today.”
Q.10. Mohan said to his sister, “I am your brother and so I shall help you from any danger even at the cost of my life.”

I think no. 10 question is wrong because it should be Mohan said to his sister but it has been given Mohan said to her sister.
