Definition of Idiom

Idioms are phrases or expressions that have a meaning different from the literal interpretation of the individual words. They often convey a cultural or contextual significance and are widely used in language to add depth or convey ideas in a more colorful way.

1. Achilles’ heels

A small but fatal weakness. [कमजोर पक्ष]

Example:

Maths has always been her Achilles heel.

2. Add fuel to fire

To make a matter worse. [आग में घी डालना]

Example:

Yesterday’s bans will add fuel to the fire.

3. An arm chair job

Good income job with high comfort. [आसान और अच्छी आय वाली नौकरी]

Example:

Everyone in this world would want an arm chair job.

4. An axe to grind

Something done for selfish reasons. [छिपा हुआ उद्देश्य]

Example:

My friend, Rohan is an environmentalists and he has no political axe to grind – he just wants to save the planet.

5. An iron-will

Strong will power. [दृढ़ इच्छा शक्ति]

Example:

She has an iron will to survive and fought bravely against corona.

6. An old flame

A person, one had a romantic relationship with, in the past. [पुराना प्यार]

Example:

Then he meets an old flame who is now a wealthy doctor.

7. An old head on young shoulders

A child or young person who thinks and talks like an older and experienced person. [उम्र से ज्यादा समझदार होना]

Example:

She seems to have an old head on young shoulders and plenty of talent to boot.

8. An olive branch

Peace request/ peace treaty. [शांति निवेदन]

Example:

You should offer an olive branch and apply damage control.

9. Apple of discord

Matter of dispute. [झगड़े का कारण या वस्तु]

Example:

The border issue has long been an apple of discord among the two countries

10. Apple of one’s eye

Very lovable/ dearest one. [दुलारा / प्यारा]

Example:

I just love Soni. She’s the apple of my eye.

11. Apple-pie-order

In good condition. [बिलकुल ठीक हालत में]

Example:

Classroom was in apple pie order when I entered

12. At a loss

To be unable to decide. [निर्णय न ले पाना]

Example:

I’m at a loss to explain what happened in the party yesterday.

13. At a pinch

In a trouble. [समस्या में होना ]

Example:

I can help out at a pinch if you need a babysitter.

14. At arm’s length

Avoid becoming too friendly. [दूर रखना]

Example:

He had always kept his family at arm’s length.

15. At daggers drawn

To have bitter enmity. [कट्टर दुश्मनी होना]

Example:

I didn’t expect such a sensible couple to be at daggers drawn over such a petty matter

16. At ease

Free from pain and anxiety. [चिंता के बिना]

Example:

As she stood in front of the class, she seemed totally at ease.

17. At one’s finger’s ends

Example:

Every solution should be at one’s finger’s end to qualify for this exam.

18. At one’s wit’s end

Puzzled / confused / perplexed. [चकित / हक्का-बक्का]

Example:

I’m at my wits’ end. I don’t know how to help him.

19. At sixes and sevens

In disorder. [अस्त-व्यस्त में]

Example:

My books are always at sixes and sevens.

20. At stake

At risk and unsecured. [दांव पर / खतरे में]

Example:

His life was at risk.
