Summary of A Triumph of Surgery NCERT Class 10th

James Alfred Wight, known as James Herriot, was a famous British veterinarian and writer. He wrote a story called “A Triumph of Surgery.” The story begins with Mrs. Pumphrey, a wealthy lady, taking her dog Tricky for a walk.

While they were outside, a nearby veterinarian saw Tricky and was shocked because the dog looked extremely overweight, like a sausage with legs at each end. He advised Mrs. Pumphrey to stop feeding Tricky so much, but she couldn’t say no to her dog.

Unfortunately, Tricky became ill, and Mrs. Pumphrey had to call the veterinarian for help.

The storyteller, Mr. Herriot, managed to bring Tricki to his hospital for treatment, even though he knew Mrs. Pumphrey would never be apart from her dog. He brought Tricki with him and set up a bed for the dog in his treatment room.

For the first two days, the dog didn’t move around much and didn’t eat anything. However, on the third day, Tricki wanted to go outside and started playing with larger dogs. He even licked the empty bowls of other dogs to finish their leftover food.

Tricki got better really quickly. He even began to compete with other dogs for his meals. When Mrs. Pumphrey heard about this, she sent eggs to the hospital, thinking that Tricki needed extra energy to recover. But Mr. Herriot and his colleagues ended up eating those eggs for their breakfast.

Additionally, to help improve Trick’s health, Mrs. Pumphrey began sending wine and brandy in bottles. However, Mr. Herriot, the doctor, ended up drinking them instead of giving them to Trick. After a few days, the doctor realized this was a problem and called Mrs. Pumphrey, who was very concerned about Tricki’s well-being and wanted to bring him home.

Tricki was overjoyed to see his owner and eagerly hopped into the car. Mrs. Pumphrey expressed her gratitude, saying she could never thank the doctor enough for his wonderful care. She also mentioned that Tricki’s surgery had been successful, and he was now fully cured.

Conclusion of A triumph of Surgery

The story signifies that the parents should not be indulgent which may harm their children.
