Summary of Chapter 2 The Thief’s Story – Footprints without Feet Class 10th
Anil was a young writer who lived a carefree life. He earned money by writing for magazines. One day, while watching a wrestling match, he met Hari, who was skilled at making new friends. Hari used a classic method of flattering people to become their friend. He became friends with Anil.
Anil promised to teach Hari how to write and do math, and he also showed him how to cook delicious food. Every day, Hari went out to buy essential items and made a profit of one rupee daily. Anil was aware of this, but he didn’t mind. They both lived together happily.
A month passed, and during this time, Hari Singh didn’t continue his usual business. One day, he noticed that Anil had a bundle of money and hid it under the mattress. Seeing this, a bad idea came into Hari’s mind, and he decided to steal the money from Anil that very night.
After they had dinner, Anil went to sleep peacefully. But Hari couldn’t sleep; he got up quietly. He went to Anil’s bed, reached under the mattress, and took the bundle of money. Then he ran away on the road.
Hari Singh decided to head straight to the railway station and catch the Lucknow Express. He thought that by leaving the city, Anil wouldn’t be able to catch him. When he reached the railway station, the Lucknow Express was just about to leave.
Suddenly, a good part of Hari’s conscience spoke to him. It told him not to betray Anil’s trust. The train was already moving, but Hari couldn’t bring himself to get on it. He kept thinking about Anil’s innocent face.
Hari realized that he was more worried about what Anil would think of him than the money itself. Anil might not be upset about the money, but he could feel hurt that someone had broken his trust. This created a conflict in Hari’s mind.
Hari didn’t want to lose Anil’s trust because he knew Anil was a simple and kind person. Plus, Anil was teaching him how to read and do math, which could greatly improve his life. It could help him become a respected member of society.
He walked away from the train station and found a park. He sat down on a bench, and suddenly, a heavy rain began. This happened in November, and a cold wind started blowing. Hari felt even more uncomfortable because he had deceived a kind-hearted person. His shirt and pants were wet from the rain, sticking to his body.
Then he went to the Clock Tower to shelter from the rain. He sat there under the tower. Suddenly, he remembered his money. He looked for it and saw that all the money was wet. Feeling guilty, he quietly returned the money under the mattress.
The next day, when Anil woke up, he made tea for both himself and Hari. He gave Hari a fifty rupee note and said that he would be paid regularly from now on. Hari took the note and realized that it was still wet. He understood that Anil knew about what had happened the previous night.
