Should Ought To And Must Difference

“Should”, “must” and “ought to” are all modal verbs in English, and they have different implications (आशय) and meanings.

Should: – “Should” is often used to indicate a suggestion, recommendation, or advice. It is used to express what is good, proper or correct to do in a particular situation. “Should” can also indicate an expectation or likelihood.

For Example:

You should take a jacket because it might rain. (suggestion)
We should finish the project by Friday. (recommendation)
She should know the answer to this question. (expectation)

Must: – “Must” is used to indicate an obligation or necessity. It expresses something that is required or mandatory to do. It often carries a stronger sense of compulsion than “should”.

For Example:

You must arrive on time. (obligation)
I must pay my rent every month. (necessity)
They must stop the car immediately. (requirement)

Ought to: – “Ought to” is also used to give advice or a recommendation, but it implies more of a moral obligation or duty than “should”. It suggests that something is the right or proper thing to do in light of a moral standard or ethical consideration.

For example:

You ought to stop smoking for your health. (moral duty)
He ought to apologize for his behavior. (moral requirement)
We ought to respect each other’s opinions. (moral obligation)

In summary, “should” suggests, recommends or advises, whereas “must” indicates an obligation or necessity. “Ought to” leans more towards a moral obligation or duty.
