MISUSED WORDS IN ENGLISH

There are a great many words in the English language which are generally misunderstood and misused (Misused words in English) while writing and sometimes even while speaking. Here are some important words which you need to learn…

1. Affect vs Effect

Affect – (Verb) – Have an effect on; make a difference to. (प्रभावित करना/प्रभाव डालना)

Verb Forms

Ex. How will these changes affect us?
इन परिवर्तनों का हम पर क्या प्रभाव पड़ेगा?

Effect – (Noun) – A change that somebody/something causes in somebody/something else; a result (प्रभाव)
Ex. I tried to persuade her, but with little or no effect.
मैंने उसे मनाने की कोशिश की, लेकिन बहुत कम या कोई असर नहीं हुआ।

2. Advise vs Advice

Advise – (Verb) – To tell somebody what you think they should do in a particular situation (सलाह देना/परामर्श देना)

Ex. I advised him to learn English.
मैंने उसे अंग्रेजी सीखने की सलाह दी।

Advice – (Noun) – An opinion that someone offers you about what you should do or how you should act in a particular situation. (सलाह/परामर्श)
Take advice, Get advice and Give advice

Ex. Rohan gave me some good advice.
रोहन ने मुझे कुछ अच्छी सलाह दी।

3. Compliment vs Complement

Compliment – (Noun) – A comment that expresses praise or approval of somebody (तारीफ/प्रशंसा)
To pay somebody a compliment

Ex. It’s a great compliment for me to be asked to do the job.
काम करने के लिए कहा जाना मेरे लिए बहुत बड़ी तारीफ है।
I take it as a compliment.
मैं इसे तारीफ के तौर पर लेता हूं।

Phrasal Use

To fish for compliments – Try to get something, or to find out something, although you are pretending not to.

Ex. She is always fishing for compliments about her looks.
वह हमेशा अपने लुक्स की तारीफों के लिए तरसती रहती हैं।

Compliment – (Verb) – Praise somebody. Compliment can also be used as a verb to refer to the act of giving a compliment. (प्रशंसा करना / अभिनंदन करना)

Ex. He complimented Meera on her appearance.
उन्होंने मीरा की शक्ल-सूरत की तारीफ की।

They complimented Mohan on his performance.

Complement – (Noun) – A thing that completes or brings to perfection. (पूरक/अनुपूरण)

Ex. Vocabulary is a perfect complement to the English language.

शब्दावली अंग्रेजी भाषा का एक आदर्श पूरक है।

Complement – (Verb) – ​Complement something to add to something in a way that improves it or makes it more attractive (इज़ाफ़ा करना / पूरक जोड़ना)

Ex. The team needs players who complement each other.

4. Breathe vs Breath

Breathe – (Verb) – Breathe is a verb referring to the act of breath going in and out of our lungs. (साँस लेना)

Verb Forms

Ex. She was beginning to breathe more easily.
वह और आसानी से सांस लेने लगी थी।

Breath – (Noun) – The air that you take into your lungs and send out again

As long as there is breath left in my body, I will continue to refuse.
जब तक मेरे शरीर में सांस बाकी है, मैं मना करता रहूंगा।

5. Stationary and Stationery

Stationary – (Adjective) – Not moving or not intended to be moved. (स्थावर/अचल/स्थित/एक ही स्थान में ठहरा हुआ)

Ex. The car collided with a stationary vehicle.
कार खड़े वाहन से टकरा गई।

Stationery – (Noun) – Materials for writing and for using in an office, for example paper, pens and envelopes (लेखन-सामग्री / लिखने के सामानों)

Ex. She printed her homework on her best stationery.
उसने अपना होमवर्क अपनी सबसे अच्छी स्टेशनरी पर छापा।

6. Desert vs Dessert

Desert – (Noun) [ˈdezət]- A large area of land that has very little water and very few plants growing on it. Many deserts are covered by sand. रेगिस्तान

Ex. She travelled many miles across burning desert sands by herself.
उसने अकेले रेगिस्तान में कई मील की यात्रा की।
The northern part of our country is a desert.
हमारे देश का उत्तरी भाग मरुस्थल है।

Desert – (Verb) – To leave someone or something without help or in a difficult situation. (कर्तव्य छोड़कर भागना/किसी को अकेला या मुसीबत में छोड़ना)

Ex. He deserted his wife when she was pregnant.
उसने अपनी गर्भवती पत्नी को अकेला छोड़ दिया।

Dessert – (Noun) – [/dɪˈzɜːt/] – Sweet food eaten at the end of a meal. (मिठाई/खाने के बाद मिठाई)
There is only ice cream and cheesecake for dessert.
मिठाई के लिए केवल आइसक्रीम और चीज़केक है।
