Hi friends, In this post (Error detection based on Adjective) I am writing top 25 basic spotting error questions based on adjective. Detailed explanation of every question has been given. All these questions have been asked in the various exams of SSC.  You can also watch video and download Pdf of this post. 

Instruction:- Some of the sentences have errors and some have none. Find out which part of a sentence has error select the appropriate letter (a, b, c). If there is no error, your answer (d).

1. Radha is, perhaps the (a) bravest and (b) clever girl in the class. (c) No error (d)

Explanation – (c) Parallel construction is followed with ‘And’ so change clever to cleverest.

2. This book (a) is more preferable (b) to that. (c) No error (d)

Explanation – (b) Remove more because preferable itself has comparative meaning.

3. This is the most (a) happiest day (b) in my life. (c) No error (d)

Explanation – (a) Remove most because two consecutive superlative degrees are not used.

4. Out of these two books, (a) I buy the least (b) costly . (c) No error (d)

Explanation – (b) the + comparative degree is used when of the two or of the two + plural noun is used

5. Churchill was (a) greater than (b) any politician of his time. (c) No error (d)

Explanation – (c) any other  + singular noun or all other + plural noun is used in comparative degree.

6. The doctor observed that (a) the patient was gradually (b) becoming weak. (c) No error (d)

Explanation – (c) after some verbs like becoming, getting, growing, becoming, comparative degree is used so weaker or weaker and weaker and weaker should be used.

7. The two first (a) chapters of (b) this book are interesting. (c) No error (d)

Explanation – (a) Ordinal + cardinal numeral adjective is used so first two should be used.

8. No less than (a) two thousand soldiers (b) were killed in the battle . (c) No error (d)

Explanation –(a) less is used with uncountable noun so change it into fewer than.

9. The girl said (a) that she prefers the (b) blue gown than the black one. (c) No error (d)

Explanation –(c) than should be changed into to; prefer takes preposition to not than.

10. It is easy (a) to talk about a problem (b) than to resolve it. (c) No error (d)

Explanation –(a) since than is used easy should be changed into easier.

11. Of the two (a) sisters the elder (b) is more religious. (c) No error (d)

Explanation –(c) the + comparative degree is used when ‘of the two + plural’ noun is used.

12. Rohan feels that (a) his shirt (b) is superior than my shirt. (c) No error (d)

Explanation –(c) To should be used instead of than. Remember that the Latin adjectives which end in ‘or’ take preposition ‘To’

13. The statue of Buddha (a) is the most (b) unique object in the museum. (c) No error (d)

Explanation –(b) Remove most, as there are some adjectives which have superlative degree in themselves so no need to make them superlative degree by adding most or -est to them.

14. Ram is the tallest (a) of all other persons (b) in his country. (c) No error (d)

Explanation –(b) Remove other because it is used in the comparative degree.

15. The history book (a) is cheaper (b) than good. (c) No error (d)

Explanation –(b) More + positive degree is always used when the two qualities of same person or things are compared. More cheap should be used instead of cheaper.

Explanation –(b) any should replace some because some is used in affirmative and any is used in negative and interrogative.

Explanation –(c) anything should replace something.

18. No umpires in the world (a) is as respected (b) as Dicky Bird of England. (c) No error (d)

Explanation –(a) other should be used after No. No other is used in positive degree.

19. All renew licences may (a) be collected (b) from the cashier’s counter. (c) No error (d)

Explanation –(a) It should be renewed because an adjective is used before a noun.

20. I cannot ask him (a) for money without (b) any vividly reason. (c) No error (d)

Explanation –(c) vivid should be used as it is used before noun. An adjective is used before a noun not an adverb.

Explanation –(b) As the sentence has positive meaning a few should be used.

23. The doctor refused (a) to give any medicine as (b) there was a little hope of his recovery. (c) No error (d)

Explanation –(c) Little should be used as the sentence has a negative meaning.

24. Amrita was (a) overburden (b) by his office work. (c) No error (d)

Explanation –(b) Should be overburdened because after verb to be a past participle should be used.

25. I am much glad (a) that you (b) have won the prize. (c) No error (d)

Explanation –(a) Remove much as much is used before past participle.
