1. Why and when did the narrator say that ‘everything’ was going well, it was an easy flight.’? (Black Aeroplane)

This excerpt is from the short story “Black Aeroplane”. Frederick Forsyth was the pilot who describes his strange flight experience he had in this story. The story is about a pilot who got lost in a dark cloud during his flight from Paris to London and was guided by a strange airplane that had appeared in the middle of that cloud.

The flight of old Dakota started in Paris and headed towards England. It was an easy flight, the sky was clear and the weather was fine. When it reached 150 km away from Paris, it suddenly confronted huge black storm clouds. It only had limited fuel to take him to England. He could go back to Paris but he decided to take the risk and go through the storm clouds because he wanted to spend the holiday with his family.

2. How did Valli fulfil her desire to ride a bus to the town and back?

Valli was an eight-year-old girl who had a strong desire to take a bus ride. She heard the people around talking about bus rides and silently gathered all the information required before she took her first ride. She saved every single penny possible so that she could take a return journey in the bus. Eventually, one afternoon when Valli’s mother was taking an afternoon nap post lunch, Valli sneaked out of the house for her first bus ride.

She boarded the bus on her own and shunned the conductor when he offered help and called her ‘madam’. She stood up on the seat to enjoy the views around the bus when she could not see them clearly while sitting. On her return journey, she enjoyed the same natural sights around but her face fell when she saw a dead cow hit by a fast moving vehicle. The memory of the dead cow haunted Valli. She no longer wanted to see out of the window and kept sitting on her seat until her village came. She got down and wished the conductor to see him again. The conductor smiled. He told Valli that whenever she felt like riding the bus she could come and join them.

3. What other interests, besides Science, did Richard Ebright pursue? What did Mr. Kleiherer, his Social Studies teacher, tell us about Ebright?

Richard Ebright was interested in science since childhood but he also had many other interests. He was a passionate public speaker and was an important part of Debating Society and Model United Nations Club. He was an enthusiastic photographer, especially interested in nature and scientific exhibits. He was also a canoeist and enjoyed the outdoors.

Mr. Kleiherer said that Ebright would always put extra effort. Not only did he put in three or four hours at night engaging himself in debate research but would also do all his research with butterflies and deal with his other areas of interest. Mr. Kleiherer was of the opinion that Ebright was competitive in a true sense. He didn’t want to win just for the sake of winning but to accomplish his ambition and contribute the best that he could in this field. In fact, Mr. Kleiherer always said, “For the right reasons, he wants
to be the best.”

4. Compare and contrast the characters of Great and Mighty Think Tank and Noodles.

Mighty Think-Tank was haughty and loved to be praised and highly respected. He did not have much knowledge yet he acted scholarly. Throughout the text, we see how he steals thoughts and ideas from Noodles and makes them his own. At first, Mighty Think-Tank calls the book a sandwich and orders the crew of Probe One to eat them. When Noodles says he recalls the book to be some sort of communicative device, the ruler of Mars tells the crew to listen intently for information and read it. Then he plagiarizes Noodle’s idea of swallowing vitamins in order to decipher the code. Several times we see how Mighty Think-Tank discredits Noodle’s words and calls them trifling. His name contradicts his nature. Noodles on the other hand was smart and knowledgeable. He was not gullible as Mighty Think-Tank but reasoned with logic. He was even respectful to Mighty Think-Tank.
